Reflectors — the rarest type at less than 1% of humanity — have the most distinctive decision authority in Human Design: the LUNAR CYCLE. With every centre undefined, Reflectors have no fixed inner authority. Their bodies are designed to sample the energetic field over a full ~28.4-day Moon transit cycle and only commit to major decisions once the cycle has shown how the choice feels under every possible energetic configuration. This is the slowest authority, the most misunderstood, and the most structurally non-negotiable.
How does the lunar cycle authority work mechanically?
Over ~28.4 days, the transiting Moon passes through every gate position the Reflector's chart contains, briefly defining channels and centres in the Reflector's field for hours or days at a time. Each transit configuration produces a different felt experience of the same decision. A job offer that feels right on day 1 (Moon in one configuration) may feel completely wrong on day 14 (Moon in a different configuration), and right again on day 22. The Reflector who waits a full lunar cycle samples the decision under every transit pattern they will routinely live inside. Only the decision that holds RIGHT across the full cycle — through highs, lows, and shifts — is a decision the Reflector can commit to. Decisions made earlier in the cycle are samples of one transit configuration, not assessments of the whole.
Why the lunar authority cannot be shortcut
Reflectors who try to shortcut the lunar cycle (because of social pressure, career deadlines, or partners who want decisions faster) almost always end up reversing the decision later — sometimes within weeks, sometimes after years of misalignment. The reason is structural: a defined-centre type has a fixed inner authority that gives consistent signal across transits, but a Reflector has NO fixed authority, so transit-driven variability IS their decision data. Without sampling the full cycle, the Reflector is committing on partial information. Practical implications: avoid jobs that require decisions in days, avoid partners who pressure for quick commitment, avoid contracts with short deadlines on major terms. Reflectors who structure their lives around the lunar cycle (delaying major decisions, building 4-week reflection windows into commitments) live correctly; Reflectors who don't accumulate disappointment.
What the cycle samples beyond the Moon
The lunar cycle is the FORMAL authority, but it implicitly samples much more than just transits — it also samples the people the Reflector interacts with over the 28 days, the environments they pass through, and the daily energetic weather of the surrounding community. A Reflector deciding about a major life change samples not only the Moon transit but also which friends say what, how the workplace feels on different weekdays, how the body responds across the cycle. The integration of all this signal is what makes the eventual decision correct. This is also why community quality is destiny for Reflectors — a 28-day cycle inside a toxic community produces 28 days of toxic sampling regardless of how disciplined the cycle practice is. The lunar authority requires both TIME and the right ENVIRONMENT to function as designed.
