Nine Purple (九紫) bears the classical name You Bi 右弼 — the Right Assistant, companion to the Left among the Dipper's attendants. Its element is Fire, its trigram Li 離 — flame, the middle daughter — and its home palace the south. The tradition calls it the celebration star (喜慶星): patron of festivity, recognition, beauty, and everything that becomes visible. For two decades the manuals described it as the star of future wealth; the future has since arrived — at Li Chun 2024, Nine Purple took command of Period 9 (2024–2043), and it now carries the reigning qi (旺氣) of the age.
The reigning star: Nine Purple in command
Doctrine assigns the reigning star's palace the highest value on the board, and for Period 9 that is Nine Purple's ground. The classics read its command through Li's registers: recognition and advancement, celebrations multiplying, the arts of illumination — culture, beauty, learning made public — and the middle daughter's quickness of eye. The commentarial tradition adds the star's singular mechanical property: Nine Purple is the amplifier of the nine, held to magnify whatever star it accompanies — a virtue beside the benevolent, a hazard beside the afflicted, and in its own palace, in its own period, brilliance compounding. Audit practice of the current period accordingly locates the Nine and gives it the household's or the firm's most honoured use.
Untimely Nine Purple: fire out of season
The star's untimely register is now a matter of doctrine rather than of the present calendar, but the classics record it fully. Out of season, Li's flame is read as visibility without warmth: scandal attending recognition, celebration turning brittle, haste, and the amplifier magnifying afflictions instead of blessings — an untimely Nine over a Five Yellow or Two Black is among the pairings the commentaries mark most heavily. The trigram taxonomy files Li under the eyes and the heart — the Yi Jing's symbolic anatomy, not a clinical claim — and under fire itself in the literal register, which is why the older manuals kept open flame out of an afflicted Nine's palace. None of this describes the star in command; it describes the far side of the cycle.
Annual visits: the year's celebration palace
When the annual chart re-flies at Li Chun (立春) — the centre number stepping down by one each solar year — the sector receiving the year's Nine Purple is read as the annual celebration palace: favoured ground for gatherings, weddings hosted, honours received, and the visible occasions of the household's year. Because the star amplifies, the almanac tradition reads its landings with both hands: the annual Nine over a benevolent resident brightens the palace's reading; over a resident Two or Five it magnifies the caution instead, and the sector is treated for the affliction rather than dressed for the feast. The visit expires with the solar year, as all annual visits do.
Enhancers by the element cycle: Wood feeds Fire
Fire is fed by Wood and drained by Earth. To support the reigning star, classical practice supplies living Wood in its palace — plants in vigour, greens, the tall rectangular forms of the element — with Fire's own reds and fine lighting laid over it; the south palace, Li's home, has carried this dressing in the classical literature for centuries. Where the amplifier magnifies what it should not — a Nine joined to an afflicted Earth star — Earth drains Fire: ochres, ceramics, square heavy forms, the palace kept calm while the elemental treatment of its companion leads. Water, Fire's conqueror, is withheld: the tradition does not douse the reigning star. Feed it, order it, and let the celebration star keep its name.
