One White (一白) is the first of the nine flying stars, classically named Tan Lang 貪狼 — the Greedy Wolf, first star of the Northern Dipper's nine. Its element is Water, its trigram Kan 坎, and its home palace the north. The Xuan Kong classics count it among the three benevolent white stars, and the Zi Bai Jue (紫白訣, the Purple-White Scroll) treats it as the star of officialdom and scholarship — 官星, the career star. Wherever One White sits in a natal or annual chart, the classical reading concerns advancement through learning, reputation earned by merit, and the quiet mobility of Water.
Timely One White: the scholar-official's star
A star is timely (得令) when the twenty-year period it governs is current or approaching, and untimely (失令) when its period lies far behind. In Period 9 (2024–2043) One White holds the position of growth qi (生氣) — the incoming star whose influence strengthens across the period, with its own command following in Period 1 (2044–2063). Timely, Tan Lang shows the noble face recorded in the classics: examination success, appointment to office, clear judgement, and a reputation that travels the way Water travels — quietly and far. The Zi Bai Jue's most quoted formula, 一四同宮 (One and Four in the same palace), pairs it with the academic Four Green and reads the meeting as scholarly distinction. Rooms holding a timely One White are classically favoured for desks, studies, and negotiation.
Untimely One White: when Water turns cold
When its period is distant, the classics read the same Water nature in a lower register. The Fei Xing Fu (飛星賦) and its commentaries associate an untimely One White with isolation, drifting, and losses that arrive the way damp arrives — slowly and unnoticed. The correspondences filed under Kan in the trigram taxonomy are the kidneys, ears, and blood — a doctrinal assignment inherited from the Yi Jing's symbolic anatomy, not a clinical statement. Because One White is benevolent by temperament, its untimely conduct is mild beside the true malefics: the texts describe dimmed judgement and cooled relationships rather than calamity. Most schools accordingly leave a resting One White alone rather than treating it.
Annual visits: where the year's One White lands
Beside a building's natal chart, the stars re-fly annually: each solar year — beginning at Li Chun (立春), in early February — a new star enters the central palace, the centre number stepping down by one each year, and the remaining eight redistribute along the Luo Shu flight path. The sector receiving the year's One White takes on its character for that year. Classical practice treats the annual One White sector as favourable ground for study, writing, and career matters, and watches for the palaces where the visit completes 一四同宮 with a resident Four Green. Because the visit lasts one solar year, adjustments stay light — the use and furnishing of the room, never structural change.
Remedies and enhancers by the element cycle
Flying-star treatment follows the Wu Xing cycles: to strengthen a star, feed it with the element that produces it; to subdue one, drain it with the element it produces. The classics prefer exhausting (洩) a star to attacking it — control provokes what it opposes. Water is produced by Metal and drained by Wood. To support a timely One White, classical practice places Metal in its sector — round metal forms, whites and metallic colours — and keeps the palace clean and still, as still water clears. Where an untimely One White wants softening, living Wood — plants, greens, tall rectangular forms — draws the excess away. Fire and Earth are avoided in either case: the one clashes with Water, the other muddies it.
