Overview
Qi Men Dun Jia (奇門遁甲) is the classical Chinese system for choosing optimal moments and directions for important actions — launches, contracts, travel, key meetings. Famous strategists like Zhuge Liang allegedly used it to win battles against superior forces.
Modern practitioners use it the same way: not to predict, but to align action with favourable cosmic configuration. This guide walks through the practical workflow.
- Step 1
Define the event clearly
QMDJ works best when the event is specific. "Launch the product" is too vague. "Send the announcement email and post to LinkedIn" is precise enough to time. Vague events get vague reads.
- Step 2
Determine your direction
Most QMDJ work involves a target direction. For physical actions: where are you going? For digital: where is the target audience? For meetings: which compass direction is the meeting room from your starting point? Get this in degrees if possible.
- Step 3
Generate the chart for the candidate hour
A QMDJ chart is generated for each 2-hour period (Chinese double-hour). Generate the chart for the time you're considering. The chart maps 8 Doors, 9 Stars, 8 Deities, and 3 Wonders across a 9-palace grid. The free hour-board calculator lets you find a 2-hour decision window without an account.
- Step 4
Read the Door in your direction
The 8 Doors are: Open (good for new ventures), Rest (peace, retreat), Life (auspicious, growth), Harm (negative), Du / Block (obstruction), Surprise (sudden events), Death (worst), Scenery (visibility, recognition). Want Open, Rest, Life, or Scenery for most events. Avoid Death, Harm, Block.
- Step 5
Read the Star and Deity in your direction
The 9 Stars and 8 Deities further qualify the Door. A Life Door with the Heaven Heart star is excellent. A Life Door with the Heaven Pillar star adds caution. Read all three layers (Door + Star + Deity) for the chosen direction palace.
- Step 6
Choose the optimal palace
If multiple time windows have favourable doors, prefer ones with the 3 Wonders (Yi 乙, Bing 丙, Ding 丁) in the active palace. These celestial agents amplify whatever the door is doing.
- Step 7
Take action in the chosen window
Within the 2-hour Chinese hour you selected, perform the action. Travel in the chosen direction first if possible (even a symbolic step). The classical practice is to "activate" the favourable energy by physically moving into it.
Result
You have a methodology for using QMDJ to time events. Practitioners typically select 1-3 high-stakes events per month — overusing it on small decisions dilutes attention and degrades the practice.
