Overview

Your Kua number is a single digit between 1 and 9 (excluding 5) that identifies your auspicious and inauspicious compass directions in Ba Zhai (Eight Mansions) Feng Shui. It's calculated from your birth year and gender.

There are two formulas — pre-2000 birth years and 2000+ — and a couple of edge cases for the year boundary (Lichun, not January 1). This guide covers all three.

  1. Step 1

Determine your Ba Zi birth year

Ba Zhai uses the Solar Calendar (Lichun, ~Feb 4) as the year boundary, not Jan 1. If you were born in January or early February before Lichun, use the PREVIOUS year for your calculation. This is the same boundary rule as Ba Zi.

    Example

Born January 15, 2000 → use birth year 1999 (since Lichun 2000 is Feb 4).

  2. Step 2

    For birth years 1900–1999 (males)

Sum the last two digits of your birth year. Reduce to a single digit by repeated summing. Subtract that result from 10. The answer is your Kua. If the answer is 5, use 2 instead.

    Example

    Male born 1985: 8+5=13 → 1+3=4. 10−4 = 6. Kua = 6.

  3. Step 3

    For birth years 1900–1999 (females)

Sum the last two digits of your birth year. Reduce to a single digit. Add 5. Reduce again if needed. If the answer is 5, use 8 instead.

    Example

    Female born 1985: 8+5=13 → 1+3=4. 4+5=9. Kua = 9.

  4. Step 4

    For birth years 2000+ (males)

Sum the last two digits of your birth year. Reduce to a single digit. Subtract from 9. If the answer is 5, use 2 instead.

    Example

    Male born 2005: 0+5=5. 9−5 = 4. Kua = 4.

  5. Step 5

    For birth years 2000+ (females)

Sum the last two digits of your birth year. Reduce to a single digit. Add 6. Reduce again if needed. If the answer is 5, use 8 instead.

    Example

    Female born 2005: 0+5=5. 5+6=11 → 1+1=2. Kua = 2.

  6. Step 6

    Identify your Group

East Group Kuas: 1, 3, 4, 9. West Group Kuas: 2, 6, 7, 8. Each group has 4 auspicious and 4 inauspicious directions. Your bed, work desk, and front door should align with your auspicious directions for best Ba Zhai luck.

Result

You have your Kua number and you know which group (East or West) you belong to. The next step is mapping your home: identify which sectors of your home are auspicious for you.
