How to calculate your Life Path number

·~2 min read

Your Life Path number is the most important number in Pythagorean numerology — it represents your life's purpose and the lessons you're here to learn. It's calculated from your full birth date and reduces to a single digit (1–9) or a Master Number (11, 22, 33).

Overview

Your Life Path number is the most important number in Pythagorean numerology — it represents your life's purpose and the lessons you're here to learn. It's calculated from your full birth date and reduces to a single digit (1–9) or a Master Number (11, 22, 33).

The calculation is simple arithmetic, but two pitfalls trip up most beginners: how to handle Master Numbers, and which reduction method to use. This guide covers both.

  1. Step 1

    Write out your full birth date

    Use the format MM/DD/YYYY. Use the actual numerical values (no zodiac signs, no name letters yet). Numerology is calculated from the birth date the way it appears on official records.

    Example

    May 18, 1993 → 05/18/1993.

  2. Step 2

    Sum the digits of each component (preserve Master Numbers)

    Reduce each part — Month, Day, Year — separately to a single digit OR a Master Number (11, 22, 33). If any part already reduces to 11, 22, or 33 along the way, STOP at that step and keep it as a Master Number.

    Example

    May = 5 (already single). 18 = 1+8 = 9. 1993 = 1+9+9+3 = 22 (Master Number — stop, do NOT reduce to 4).

  3. Step 3

    Sum the three reduced numbers

    Add the three numbers from the previous step.

    Example

    Continuing: 5 + 9 + 22 = 36.

  4. Step 4

    Final reduction (preserve Master Numbers)

    If the sum is 11, 22, or 33, that is your Life Path. Otherwise, reduce to a single digit by summing digits.

    Example

    36 → 3+6 = 9. Life Path = 9.

  5. Step 5

    Interpret your number

    1 = Leader, 2 = Diplomat, 3 = Communicator, 4 = Builder, 5 = Adventurer, 6 = Caregiver, 7 = Seeker, 8 = Authority, 9 = Humanitarian. Master Numbers 11/22/33 carry amplified versions of 2/4/6 with higher demand and later-bloom patterns.
