How Flying Stars Feng Shui works

Flying Stars (Xuan Kong Fei Xing 玄空飞星) is the time-based branch of classical Feng Shui. Unlike Ba Zhai (which is fixed by your personal Kua), Flying Stars changes the energy of every sector of your home year by year and month by month.

1. Step 1

   Determine your home's Period

   Flying Stars uses a 20-year Period system. Period 9 began February 4, 2024 (Lichun) and runs to 2043. Your home's Period is set by when it was BUILT or last MAJOR renovated, not when you moved in. Most homes today are Period 8 (2004–2024) or Period 9.

2. Step 2

   Take a precise compass reading of the back wall

   Stand at your home's back wall (the "sitting" wall, opposite the front door). Use a precise compass reading (in degrees, not just N/S/E/W). This is the home's SITTING direction. Many beginner errors come from using the front door direction instead — sitting is the opposite.

3. Step 3

   Look up your "natal chart" for the home

   Combining the Period + Sitting direction gives you a 9-grid for your home — three numbers in each sector (mountain star, water star, period star). This is the home's permanent natal chart for the current Period.

4. Step 4

   Identify favorable sectors

   #8 Earth (Period 8) and #9 Fire (Period 9) are timely auspicious. Sectors with these stars are good for daily activity (living rooms, work desks). #6 Metal and #1 Water are also generally favorable.

5. Step 5

   Identify problem sectors

   #5 Yellow Earth (most malefic), #2 Black Earth (illness), #3 Jade Wood (legal disputes), #7 Red Metal (theft, betrayal). Avoid placing bedrooms or major activity in #5 or #2 sectors. Use Metal cures for #5 and #2 (since Metal drains Earth).

6. Step 6

   Layer the annual stars

   Every year, a new 9-grid of "annual stars" rotates through your home, modifying the natal chart. Practitioners check both the natal AND annual configuration for any given sector. The annual star changes February 4 each year (Lichun).

7. Step 7

   Apply remedies

   Cures use the Five Elements productive/controlling cycle. Metal drains Earth (cure for #5/#2). Water drains Metal. Earth drains Fire. Place specific objects (metal coins, water features, plants) in problem sectors to redirect the chi.
