Gen 艮 is one solid line resting on two broken ones (☶): Mountain, the element Earth, and in the Shuo Gua the youngest son. The San Yuan calendar paired Period 8 (2004–2024) with Gen; in Xuan Kong Da Gua that pairing does not decide a verdict, because Periods 8 and 9 both belong to 下元 and the verdict reads only the half of the cycle.
Its two places on the compass
In the Later Heaven palaces Gen holds the northeast: the mountains 丑 Chou, 艮 Gen and 寅 Yin, from 22.5° to 67.5°. In the Early Heaven arrangement it stands in the northwest with the number 6, so every hexagram it tops carries a 卦氣 of 6 — He Tu Water (一六共宗). Its inverse is 兌, whose 4 makes the ten.
Its block of the ring, and the hexagrams it tops
Gen’s block runs from 270° to 315°, ending at the northwest: 遯, 咸, 旅, 小過, 漸, 蹇, 艮 itself (303.75°–309.375°) and 謙, carrying the 卦運 4, 9, 8, 3, 7, 2, 1 and 6. The hexagrams Gen tops — 頤, 賁, 損, 大畜, 蠱, 蒙, 艮 and 剝 — each carry 卦氣 6.
Reading it for a house
A house facing between 270° and 315° has a facing hexagram with Gen below and a sitting hexagram from 兌’s block behind it. A house sitting in the northeast palace (facing southwest) reads its water from Gen in the Dragon Gate formula — the other formation, beside 震’s, where no palace is left over and 輔卦 doubles 地刑. The youngest son and the hand are Gen’s Shuo Gua associations, which the ring reading does not weigh.
