The northeast is the 艮 palace, 22.5° to 67.5°. In the Dragon Gate formula it is read for each house by the position it holds in that house’s formation — and for three of the eight sittings it is where water should leave, not where it should arrive.
The northeast, house by house
Sitting 震 (east): the northeast is 先天 — water arriving is welcome, leaving harmful. Sitting 乾 (northwest): 後天 — arriving welcome, leaving harmful. Sitting 坎 (north): 輔卦 — arriving read as helpful, leaving harmful. Sitting 巽 (southeast): 客 — arriving water favours outsiders; leaving harmless. Sitting 離 (south): 天劫 — the preferred exit and the worst arrival. Sitting 兌 (west): 賓 and 天劫 together — the 天劫 reading governs: let water leave, never arrive. Sitting 坤 (southwest): 案劫, the front — water leaves, never strikes in. Sitting 艮: the northeast is the house’s own back.
Where northeast water is welcome, and where it is not
Water arriving from the northeast suits the houses sitting in 震, 乾 and 坎. It is the worst arrival for the houses sitting in 離 and 兌, for which the northeast is 天劫, and it should only leave the house sitting in 坤, which faces northeast. For the house sitting in 巽 it favours outsiders. Where a stream or slope brings water down from the northeast, the sitting palace decides whether that is an asset or the first thing to change.
The water mouth in the northeast
The northeast holds the water mouth — the mountains through which water should drain away — for the houses whose exits lie there. For the house sitting in 離, the water mouth is the 艮, 壬 and 癸 mountains; for the house sitting in 坤 it is 甲, 乙 and 艮; for the house sitting in 兌, 艮, 甲 and 乙.
