Support (天辅 Tian Fu) governs Palace 4 — the Xun 巽 trigram in the south-east, wind — and carries the Wood element in its native seat. The classical tradition classes it auspicious without reservation: this is the scholar-tutor of the Nine Stars, the agency of culture, instruction, and civil order. Where the fierce stars command and contend, Support cultivates — the wind that carries seed and teaching alike into every quarter. In the Flying Plate convention followed here, Support flies with the duty rotation, and the palace that hosts it is read as gentled: its affairs lean toward refinement, counsel, and the patient work by which people and institutions are formed.
Culture, examination, and ceremony: the classical portfolio
The almanac tradition placed the civilising occasions under Tian Fu: study and examination, the drafting of documents, appointments to office, rites and ceremonies, and — notably — marriage, which classical doctrine treats as a civil and ritual founding rather than a private mood. Xun's wind gives the star its method: penetration without force, influence that arrives gradually and everywhere, the way a curriculum or a custom does. The commentators' epithet is the tutor — the figure whose authority rests on cultivation rather than rank — and the star's presence in a palace was read as favourable weather for any matter that succeeds by preparation, propriety, and the well-chosen word.
Wood in the wind palace: why the classification holds
Support's Wood element stands in the wood palace itself — growth given direction, the sapling trained rather than merely sprouting. Doctrine reads the doubling as harmony rather than excess: the star's nature and its seat agree, and nothing in its portfolio requires the violence that makes other stars conditional. This is why the classical texts class Support among the great auspicious stars with so little argument — its gifts serve accord, and accord has few failure modes. The one caution the commentators keep is proportion: wind that only circulates never builds, and Support's refinement wants pairing with the earthier virtues — the follow-through of Duty, the command of Heart — when a matter must be not only begun beautifully but finished.
Support as your natal duty star
A natal plate led by Support — the Zhi Fu 值符 of the birth hour — is read as the counsellor's signature: love of learning, verbal grace, an instinct for teaching and for the tactful arrangement of people and ideas. The tradition reads such natures toward scholarship, advising, diplomacy, and every craft in which refinement is the substance rather than the polish. Authority arrives, in this reading, by cultivation — others consult the Support nature because consultation is rewarded, and the trust compounds the way learning does. The classical caution is mild but real: the counsellor's seat is beside the throne, not on it, and the commentaries counsel Support natures to choose deliberately whose ventures their gifts will steer.
Meeting Support in a period plate
A period plate led by Support reads as favourable weather for the civil and the formal: examinations, submissions, signings conducted in good order, ceremonies, the opening of studies, the careful letter. Classical practice reached for such hours when a matter needed to be received well — the star inclines audiences toward courtesy — and read a Support-hosted palace as softened in its disputes. Support beside its Palace 4 companion, the Delusion Door, tempers concealment into discretion; met with Life Door, it inclines a founding toward learning. A plate led by an auspicious star reads as an open window overall — and Support's particular opening is for whatever deserves to be done properly.
