Projectors have the most varied decision authorities in Human Design — five distinct possibilities depending on which centres are defined: splenic (in-the-moment knowing), emotional (waiting through the wave), self-projected (speaking through the throat to hear truth), ego-projected (willingness from the heart), or mental/lunar (no inner authority — sounding board + lunar cycle). Without a defined Sacral, Projectors do not have the binary yes/no response Generators rely on. Each Projector authority has its own protocol, and getting it right is doubly important because Projectors only have ~70-80% of the energy reserves a Generator has — wrong decisions are more expensive.
Splenic and emotional authorities for Projectors
Splenic-authority Projectors (~33% of Projectors) decide through the spleen's quiet in-the-moment knowing. The spleen speaks once, immediately, when a situation first appears — and after the formal invitation has been received. Reflection or sleep does not refine the splenic signal; it only obscures it. Emotional-authority Projectors (~50%) decide by waiting through the full emotional wave before any major commitment, typically 24-72 hours. Both authorities still depend on the wait-for-invitation strategy first: the invitation is what opens the field for the authority to read accurately. A splenic projector following a hunch on uninvited engagement, or an emotional projector waiting through a wave on uninvited engagement, is reading distorted signal. Authority and strategy work together — invitation first, then authority decides.
Self-projected and ego-projected authorities
Self-projected authority (~10% of Projectors) is unique to Projectors and rare overall. The Projector hears their own truth by speaking it aloud — not asking another person, not reflecting silently, but literally talking out the decision and listening to which version of words the throat lands on. The protocol: find a sounding board (a friend, a recorder, a journal you read aloud), talk through the choice from multiple angles, and notice which phrasing carries the embodied yes. Ego-projected authority (~5%) is similar to ego-manifested — a willing 'I want to' from the heart through the throat — but for Projectors it must follow the invitation. Both authorities feel strange to people from cultures that value silent reflection or written deliberation, but the throat is where these Projectors hear themselves correctly.
Mental authority and the lunar inner-authority pattern
The rarest Projector configuration (~2-3%) has neither Spleen, Solar Plexus, Heart, nor G Centre to Throat — these are mental Projectors with NO inner authority. Their decision protocol depends on TWO external mechanisms: a sounding board (a trusted person who listens without advising) and TIME — sometimes a full lunar cycle (~28 days) like Reflectors. The mental Projector talks the decision through with multiple sounding boards across different days and notices which version of their own words consistently feels right across the talking. This authority is exhausting in a culture that demands instant decisions, but it produces unusually clean choices when honoured. The mental authority is also why some Projectors describe themselves as "needing to think about it" longer than feels acceptable — the body is correctly using its own time-based authority, not failing to be decisive.
