Kua 7 corresponds to Dui 兌, the Lake trigram — open water held in a basin, the image of exchange, speech, and joy — seated in the west of the Later Heaven arrangement. It belongs to the West Group of life numbers in Ba Zhai 八宅, the Eight Mansions school. The Ming Gua is calculated once from birth year and sex and then read as a fixed compass table: four favourable directions carrying the four auspicious stars, four unfavourable directions carrying the four adverse ones. The four favourable directions of Kua 7
For Kua 7 the generating breath, Sheng Qi 生氣, falls in the north-west — the direction of initiative, standing, and work that builds position. Tian Yi 天醫, the heavenly doctor, falls in the south-west, the direction the tradition assigns to recuperation and steady, practical help. Yan Nian 延年, longevity, falls in the north-east — Gen, Dui's line-for-line complement — governing the bonds that endure: marriage, family loyalty, friendships of decades. Fu Wei 伏位 rests in the west, Dui's own palace: composure, continuity, the maintenance of what is already good. These are the West Four directions, shared by every West Group Kua, so a Kua 7 person's strongest orientations all sit outside the compass's East Four entirely.
The four unfavourable directions of Kua 7
Kua 7's unfavourable four are north, south, south-east, and east. Huo Hai 禍害, mishaps, falls in the north — the lightest adversity, friction and small loss. Wu Gui 五鬼, the five ghosts, falls in the south, classically read as quarrel, gossip turned inward, and injury through trusted hands. Liu Sha 六煞, the six killings, falls in the south-east — entanglements that multiply. Jue Ming 絕命, the severed fate, falls in the east: the Ba Zhai Ming Jing pairs the gravest star with Po Jun 破軍, the army-breaker, and the Dui–Zhen pairing repeats the axe-and-tree clash of metal and wood that marks the severed fate for Kua 3 — the same two trigrams, read from the metal side. For long work and sleep, the east is the direction a Kua 7 person gives away.
Using the table: rooms, desk, and bed
A Kua 7 desk faces north-west for ambitious work and west for steady maintenance of it. The bed is set with the crown of the head toward the north-east — the classical preference for couples, since Yan Nian rules the lasting bonds — or the south-west for plain recovery. Doors facing any of the West Four are preferred. Dui is the trigram of the mouth, and practitioners give its natives one particular counsel: place the dining table and the guest seat within the favourable sectors, because the rooms where a Kua 7 household talks are, in the school's reading, the rooms where it thrives. The adverse sectors take the passive load — storage, bathing, utility — under the standard press-the-bad rule.
The character of Kua 7
Dui is the youngest daughter in the Shuo Gua — the lake, the joyous, the trigram of speech. Kua 7 people are classically read as society's connective tissue: articulate, warm, persuasive, quick to put others at ease and quicker still to sense a room's temperature. Metal is the element beneath the pleasure — discrimination, taste, the well-chosen word. The cautions the tradition attaches are the same gifts inverted: talk in place of action, charm spent where candour was owed, appetite for approval. Its counsel is characteristically concrete — keep the serious desk toward the north-west's generating breath, and let the west, Dui's own palace, be where conversation ripens into settled judgement.
