Anyone who works through the Kua formula for enough birth years will eventually produce a 5 — and then search a Ba Zhai table for it in vain. The Eight Mansions school recognises Kua 1 through 9 with 5 omitted: there is no Kua 5 table, no Kua 5 group, no Kua 5 directions. The omission is not an oversight but a structural fact of the system, and the classical remedy is a substitution — a man whose calculation yields 5 is read as Kua 2, a woman as Kua 8. This guide explains where the gap comes from and how the substitution works.
The Luo Shu centre has no trigram
Ba Zhai is built on the Luo Shu, the three-by-three magic square whose nine numbers sum to fifteen along every line. Eight of those numbers occupy the perimeter, and each perimeter palace carries one of the eight trigrams of the Later Heaven arrangement — Kan at 1 in the north, Kun at 2 in the south-west, and so on around the ring. The number 5 sits in the centre. The centre is the pivot of the square, not a direction: no trigram occupies it, and a Kua without a trigram is a contradiction in terms, because every favourable and unfavourable star in Eight Mansions practice is derived by transforming the lines of the natal trigram. No trigram, no lines; no lines, no table.
Men lodge in Kun, women lodge in Gen
The classical convention is stated in the manuals as a rule of lodging: 男寄坤，女寄艮 — males entrust the centre to Kun, females to Gen. The logic offered is elemental. The centre of the Luo Shu belongs to earth, and the trigram ring contains exactly two earth palaces — Kun in the south-west and Gen in the north-east — so the centre's qi is housed in the element's own gates, divided by sex between the yin earth of the mother trigram and the yang earth of the youngest son. The same rule serves wherever a personal trigram is derived from the Luo Shu — Flying Star practitioners computing a Ming Gua apply it identically. Classical texts largely present the sex assignment as received doctrine — consistent, ancient, and applied without exception.
What the substitution means in practice
A calculated 5 is not a ninth kind of person, a diluted Kua, or a blend. The substitution is total: a man with a calculated 5 is Kua 2 in every respect — West Group, Sheng Qi in the north-east, Jue Ming in the north, the full Kun table with nothing altered — and a woman with a calculated 5 is Kua 8 entire, with Sheng Qi in the south-west and the Gen character besides. Nothing about the person's table records that the 5 ever occurred. A calculator or book that reports a bare 5 and stops has left the derivation unfinished; the classical answer to the question of Kua 5 is always another number.
Kua 5 and the five of Nine Star Ki
Part of the confusion around the missing number comes from a neighbouring system. Nine Star Ki, the Japanese development of the same Luo Shu arithmetic, keeps 5 as a personal star — Five Yellow Earth, with its own character and its own place in that system's cycles. Ba Zhai does not. The two systems share a square and a formula's silhouette but answer different questions, and their conventions are not interchangeable. If a book or an app assigns a personal 5 with directions attached, it is describing Nine Star Ki or something derived from it — not Eight Mansions. Within Ba Zhai the doctrine is uniform: eight trigrams, eight tables, and the centre entrusted to earth's two gates.
