Seven Red (七赤) bears the classical name Po Jun 破軍 — the Army-Breaker, last blade of the Northern Dipper. Its element is yin Metal, its trigram Dui 兌 — the lake, the mouth — and its home palace the west. No star's fortunes have reversed so completely within living memory: through Period 7 (1984–2003) it was the reigning prosperity star, and the professions of the mouth — speech, performance, trade — are classically filed under its favour. Retired since 2004, it has resumed the name the tradition keeps for its untimely face: the robbery star (盜賊星).
Timely Po Jun: the silver tongue in season
In command, Seven Red is charm bearing fruit. The Xuan Kong corpus reads the timely star through Dui's registers — the mouth, the youngest daughter, joy — and assigns it prosperity in everything transacted by speech: negotiation, performance, teaching, trade, and the metal professions of edge and instrument. Period 7 (1984–2003) was its season, and the commentarial shorthand for those decades follows the doctrine exactly: eloquence rewarded, entertainments flourishing, wealth moving quickly and conversationally. Timeliness, as always, is the whole hinge — the identical nature that persuades in season is held to deceive out of it, and no star illustrates the doctrine of 得令 and 失令 more sharply than Po Jun.
Untimely Seven Red: the robbery star
Out of season — the present condition, and the standing one until the cycle returns — Seven Red reverts to the Army-Breaker. The Zi Bai Jue's couplet 三七疊至, Three and Seven arriving together, reads its pairing with Three Jade as robbery attended by official trouble: theft, deception, loss through the signed and the spoken word. Alone, the untimely star is associated with burglary, betrayal by charm, injury by metal edge, and words that cut — Dui's mouth turned. The crossed-swords pairing 交劍煞 with Six White adds contention between Metals: rivalry and splits. The classical literature does not soften this register; it counsels vigilance of the ordinary kind — locks, discretion, care with speech — alongside elemental treatment.
Annual visits: the year's vigilance palace
When the annual chart re-flies at Li Chun (立春), the sector receiving the year's Seven Red is marked for vigilance in the almanac tradition: the year's ground for guarded valuables, checked locks, and measured speech. Classical practice keeps that sector's doors and windows in good order, avoids displaying wealth there, and treats the palace as a poor host for gossip and negotiation alike while the visit lasts. The combinations are watched as ever: an annual Seven completing 三七疊至 over a resident Three Jade, or crossing swords with a resident Six White, concentrates the year's caution in that palace. The visit expires at the next Li Chun, as all annual visits do.
Remedies by the element cycle: Water drains Metal
Yin Metal is drained by Water, and Water is the classical treatment for an untimely Seven Red: still dark forms, deep blues and black, the quiet register of the element rather than the fountain's agitation — the intent is exhaustion (洩), drawing the blade's edge down rather than whetting it. What feeds the star is withheld: Earth — ceramics, crystal, yellow schemes — produces Metal and sharpens the affliction. Fire controls Metal in the conquest cycle, and some schools admit a careful red presence against a severe Seven; the older counsel stands, however, that attack provokes and exhaustion pacifies. When the cycle restores Po Jun to command, the same table reverses — Earth then enhances the silver tongue in season.
