Three Jade (三碧) carries the classical name Lu Cun 祿存 — Preserved Emolument, the granary of salaries. Its element is yang Wood, its trigram Zhen 震 — thunder — and its home palace the east. The name promises stored income; the star's conduct in the present cycle delivers something else. Long untimely, Three Jade is known in the almanac tradition as the quarrelsome star (是非星): the star of disputes, gossip, and litigation. The classics read in it thunder's double nature — the force that breaks ground in spring, and the noise that breaks the peace of a house.
Timely Lu Cun: thunder in season
Three Jade's last reign was Period 3 (1904–1923), and in Period 9 (2024–2043) it stands among the retired stars. In season, the classics grant Zhen's thunder its dignified reading: initiative rewarded, the pioneer vindicated, the eldest son advancing, income arriving through bold and early movement — the granary filled by first-mover vigour. Commentaries on the Fei Xing Fu describe a timely Three Jade as the sound of beginnings: enterprises founded, ground broken rightly, authority won by competition rather than inheritance. The same vigour that argues and sues when idle builds and leads when commanded by its period — the doctrine's recurring lesson that a star's virtue and vice are one nature, differently timed.
Untimely Three Jade: the quarrelsome star
Out of season, thunder becomes noise. The Zi Bai Jue's couplet 三七疊至 (Three and Seven arriving together) pairs an untimely Three Jade with Seven Red and reads the meeting as robbery attended by official entanglement — the classical shorthand for lawsuits, penalties, and disputes that reach the magistrate. Alone, the untimely star is read at lower volume: gossip, friction between neighbours and colleagues, contracts contested, the household argument that repeats. The trigram taxonomy files Zhen under the liver, the feet, and the voice raised in anger — symbolic correspondences, not clinical ones. Classical audits therefore keep contentious business — negotiation tables, dispute files, the doors of advocates — away from a strong untimely Three Jade where the plan allows.
Annual visits: the year's disputes palace
When the annual stars re-fly at Li Chun (立春) — the centre number descending by one each solar year — the sector receiving Three Jade is noted in the almanacs as the year's palace of words: quarrels, rumours, paper conflicts. Classical practice keeps the sector quiet in the acoustic sense — no slamming doors, no argument suffered to begin there — and reserves it for routine rather than contentious use while the visit lasts. Where the annual Three Jade doubles a natal Three, or joins Seven Red to complete 三七疊至, the year's caution concentrates in that palace. The visit expires with the year; the treatment is furniture and habit, never structure.
Remedies by the element cycle: Fire drains Wood
Wood produces Fire, so Fire is the classical drain for an untimely Three Jade: a steady lamp, warm reds and purples, the triangular and pointed forms filed under Fire in the element taxonomy. The drain is preferred to the attack — Metal controls Wood, but the conquest cycle provokes (激) what it strikes, and the commentaries reserve it for last resort. What feeds the star is withheld: Water — fountains, aquaria, deep blues — nourishes Wood and amplifies the quarrel, and fresh Wood (plants, green schemes) doubles it. When Three Jade is timely, the logic reverses: Water then enhances the pioneer star, and the east palace — thunder's home — is opened to light and movement rather than subdued.
