The most common Human Design question is some version of "how am I actually supposed to decide things?" — and most answers describe the seven authorities as though they were flavours you might identify with. They are not. Authority is assigned by a strict precedence order running over your defined centers, and the first match wins outright. If your Solar Plexus is defined, you have emotional authority, full stop — it does not matter how strong your gut response feels or how much you would prefer to trust your spleen. This piece walks the actual order the way a chart engine evaluates it, explains why emotional authority sits at the top, and covers the two cases the simple list does not handle.
The order
When a chart engine determines your authority, it does not weigh anything. It walks a list of your defined centers in a fixed sequence and returns the first one that matches:
- Solar Plexus defined → Emotional authority. Stop.
- Otherwise, Sacral defined → Sacral authority. Stop.
- Otherwise, Spleen defined → Splenic authority. Stop.
- Otherwise, Heart defined → Ego authority.
- Otherwise, G defined → Self-Projected authority. Stop.
- Otherwise, any center defined at all → Environmental, also called Mental authority. Stop.
- Otherwise, nothing defined → Lunar authority.
That is the whole mechanism. Seven branches, evaluated top to bottom, first match wins.
The practical consequence is the part people resist: if your Solar Plexus is defined, you have emotional authority even if your Sacral is also defined. Both centers are working. Both are doing things in your chart. But only one is your authority, and the hierarchy already decided which.
This is why "my gut says yes but my emotions say wait" is not a conflict between two authorities. It is one authority and one loud defined center.
Why emotional sits at the top
The ranking is not arbitrary, and the reasoning is structural rather than mystical.
A defined Solar Plexus produces a wave — emotional weather that moves over hours or days independent of circumstance. Any other signal you take while that wave is running is being read at some point on it. A sacral response sampled at the top of a wave and the same response sampled at the bottom are not the same reading.
So the traditional instruction attached to emotional authority — do not commit in the moment, wait for clarity across the wave — only works if emotional definition overrides the faster signals rather than sitting alongside them. If they competed as equals, the advice would be incoherent: you would be told to wait and to respond immediately, simultaneously.
The hierarchy resolves that. Faster signals still exist and still tell you things. They just are not the deciding vote.
The two cases the simple list gets wrong
Most explanations stop at seven items. Two of them need more care.
Ego authority splits in two. When the Heart is the deciding center, the answer depends on your type. A Manifestor gets Ego Manifested; a Projector gets Ego Projected. Same defined center, two different authorities, and the difference is decided by whether the chart has a motor connected to the Throat — the same test that separates Manifestor from Projector in the first place. Any list that shows "Ego" as a single authority has collapsed a distinction the chart actually makes.
Lunar authority is not a seventh option. It is what happens when no center is defined at all — which is the same condition that makes someone a Reflector. It is not selected so much as arrived at when every other branch fails. This is why Reflector strategy is not "wait for clarity" in the way emotional authority means it, but specifically wait a lunar cycle: roughly 28 days for the Moon to traverse the whole BodyGraph and light up, temporarily, everything the chart never holds on its own.
Where your type comes from
Authority and type are computed from the same defined centers, by a separate test, which is why the two do not map neatly onto each other.
- No centers defined at all → Reflector.
- Sacral defined → Generator, or Manifesting Generator if a motor connects to the Throat.
- Sacral undefined → Manifestor if a motor connects to the Throat, otherwise Projector.
The motors are Root, Solar Plexus, Heart and Sacral. A motor wired through to the Throat is what produces the capacity to initiate rather than wait — which is the actual mechanical difference behind the strategies:

Because type and authority are separate computations over the same centers, a Projector can hold emotional, splenic, self-projected, ego or mental authority. "Projector" tells you how to engage; your authority tells you how to decide. Conflating them is the second most common error after treating authority as a preference.
What this does and does not settle
Knowing the hierarchy settles one thing cleanly: which authority is yours. That is a structural fact about your chart, it is computable from birth data, and it does not change.
It settles nothing about whether the system is true, and it is not a decision procedure for anything that matters. Human Design is a framework for reflection. A chart cannot tell you whether to take the job, leave the relationship, or move countries, and any reading that claims otherwise has stopped describing a model and started making promises.
What the hierarchy does give you is a reason to stop asking which signal to trust. The chart already answered that. The interesting question was never which authority — it was what you do with the one you have.

Frequently asked questions
Can I have two authorities?
No. The precedence order returns exactly one. You may have several defined centers that each appear in the hierarchy, but only the highest-ranked one becomes your authority — the rest are simply defined centers doing other work in the chart.
My Sacral response feels stronger than my emotional wave. Does that change anything?
Not to the assignment. If your Solar Plexus is defined, the system gives you emotional authority regardless of what the Sacral feels like. How you weigh that in practice is your business; what the chart says is not negotiable.
Why does emotional authority rank first?
Because a defined Solar Plexus introduces a wave that moves over time, so any in-the-moment signal is being read at some point on that wave. The traditional instruction — wait out the wave before committing — only makes sense if emotional definition overrides faster signals rather than competing with them.
What is Environmental or Mental authority?
It is the fallback for a chart with defined centers but none of the ones that carry authority — no Solar Plexus, Sacral, Spleen, Heart or G. The chart engine reaches it only after every higher branch has failed.
