The number is doing something dishonest. It is flattening nine genuinely different questions into one fake answer, and the flattening throws away the only part that was useful: where the ease is, and where the work is.

Compatibility is not a single measurement. In a nine-system practice it is at least four separate computable readings, two deeper readings that demand exact birth times, three environmental readings about the space you share rather than the charts you carry — and one system that answers a different question entirely: not whether you match, but when to act.

Western synastry — how your planets converse

Synastry overlays two natal charts and reads the geometry between them: your Venus trine their Mars, your Saturn square their Moon. Flowing aspects — trines and sextiles — mark the places attraction and cooperation move without effort. Hard aspects — squares and oppositions — mark the places that generate heat, friction, and, handled well, growth.

One caveat separates honest synastry from theatre. Without birth times, planetary positions are computed for an anchor hour, and every planet tolerates that except the Moon, which moves up to about thirteen degrees in a day. A serious date-only reading should halve the weight of Moon aspects rather than pretend to a precision it does not have. That is what our engine does, and it tells you so in the method notes.

Chinese zodiac — how your years relate

The twelve year branches are not twelve personality labels; they are positions in the sexagenary cycle with classical, documented relationships. Some pairs form San He trine alliances — three branches sharing an elemental frame, like the Monkey, Rat, and Dragon around Water. Some form Liu He secret friendships. Others sit in the six clashes, the harms, or the punishments — structural tensions the tradition has catalogued for centuries.

This is the layer most "Chinese zodiac compatibility" content stops at. It is real, but it is one lens of four — the social, generational layer of a pairing, not the whole pairing.

Ba Zi day masters — whether your cores feed or drain each other

Ba Zi reads each person's Day Master — the heavenly stem of the birth day, the element that stands for the self. Two day masters relate through the five-element cycle: one can generate the other (nourishment), control it (pressure), or share the same element (kinship, and rivalry for the same resources). On top of the stems, the five classical stem combinations mark pairs the tradition treats as naturally bonding — and the day branches underneath carry the spouse-palace relations: the same trines, clashes, and harms, now operating at the private, daily-temperament layer instead of the generational one.

Numerology life paths — whether your numbers walk the same direction

Each birth date reduces to a Life Path number, with 11, 22, and 33 preserved as master numbers rather than flattened. Pairings read through resonance: identical paths, paths sharing a triad of temperament (the mental, the practical, the creative), or cross-triad pairings that run on complementarity instead of similarity. It is the lightest of the four lenses — and the one that most often names, in one line, why two very different charts still feel like the same team.

One Real Pair, Two True Answers

Two people, born 14 March 1992 and 2 July 1988. A Monkey and a Dragon. Their zodiac lens scores 85 — Monkey and Dragon are two of the three allies in the Water trine, one of the strongest year-level alliances the tradition names.

The same two people's day masters score 55. Both are Earth day masters — kinship, but also two people drawing from the same well — and their day branches sit in one of the six classical harm pairs, a quiet, cumulative friction the tradition specifically warns builds up in domestic life.

A one-number calculator would average this into meaninglessness. The honest reading is the shape: a pair whose years make them natural public allies, and whose private temperaments will need deliberate, unglamorous maintenance. The Two That Go Deeper — and Demand a Birth Time

Two systems read relationship mechanics at a resolution two dates cannot reach, and both are honest enough to refuse date-only input.

Human Design reads relationships through connection mechanics: how two bodygraphs interlock, which definition one person completes in the other, how the types interact — a Generator's sustainable energy meeting a Projector's guidance, a Manifestor's initiating meeting a Reflector's sampling. All of it hangs off gate-level calculations that shift with minutes of birth time, because the design side of the chart is cast roughly three months before birth from an 88-degree solar arc. Zi Wei Dou Shu dedicates one of its twelve palaces — the spouse palace, 夫妻宮 — specifically to marriage and partnership, with the stars seated there describing the partner and the pattern of the bond. But the palace layout is anchored to the birth hour. Shift the hour, and every palace rotates. A spouse-palace reading from a date alone is fiction; from a timed chart, it is one of the most specific relationship instruments in the Zi Wei Dou Shu system.

The Three That Read Your Home, Not Your Charts

Here is the part almost every compatibility article gets wrong: three of the nine systems are not about the two of you at all.

Feng Shui — specifically the Ba Zhai school — assigns each person a Kua number from birth year and gender, which sorts everyone into an East or West group with four favorable and four unfavorable compass directions each. For a couple, the reading is not "are your Kuas compatible" so much as can the same home serve you both — whose favorable directions the bedroom, desk, and door actually face, and how to arrange a shared space when your groups differ.

Xuan Kong Da Gua reads a property itself: the precise facing degree of a home maps to one of the 64 hexagrams, and that hexagram — not either partner's chart — describes the energetic character of the space a couple lives inside.

The Water Formula goes narrower still: from Kua and facing it derives the specific direction from which water — literal or symbolic flow — supports or drains a household's fortune.

None of these score the pair. All of them matter to the pair, because most relationships are lived inside a shared space. Different question, different instrument.

The One That Answers "When," Not "Whether"

Qi Men Dun Jia is a timing art. It casts hour-level charts of the sky-and-earth configuration and names which windows favor which kinds of action. Applied to relationships, it has nothing to say about whether two charts match — and quite a lot to say about when to have the difficult conversation, make the proposal, or sign the lease.
